Revenue Protection (RP) – A Revenue Protection (RP) policy protects a policyholder’s income when the crop insurance revenue falls below the guaranteed crop insurance revenue. It provides coverage to protect against loss of revenue caused by low prices, low yields or a combination of both.
Area Risk Protection (ARP) – An Area Risk Protection (ARP) policy is a county-based insurance product that pays the policyholder in the event the actual county revenue falls below the county trigger revenue selected by the policyholder.

Meet Bethany Bielecki

Now the newest Greene Crop employee, Bethany graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Agribusiness in May 2019 with a focus in Finance. While a Purdue student, and immediately following graduation, she worked at Indiana Packers Corporation supporting their Food Safety and Quality Assurance team in research and development. Bethany is currently pursuing her Juris Doctorate at IU McKinney School of Law with a strong desire to work in Agriculture Law. Bethany is passionate about the business challenges facing producers across the agriculture industry and is dedicated to protecting the entity, increasing profitability, and balancing smart agronomic choices. Prior to starting law school, Bethany showed horses in 4-H and on the AQHA circuit for 14 years. In her free time, she enjoys helping her fiancé with his club lamb operation and spending time outside with her dog, Amber. “Am I putting on enough nitrogen?” This is a common question we are receiving these days and unfortunately, the answer is not as simple as yes or no. This is especially true when we consider soils with high levels of magnesium. An old rule of thumb suggests that one bushel of corn removes (and therefore requires) one pound of nitrogen to be applied. However, nitrogen is such a leaky system that it seldom works that way. Additionally, when magnesium levels are high, the soil dynamic changes. Higher magnesium levels create tighter soils which cannot handle water as well and keeps soil colder. This leads to “sticky soils” and soils that are much more likely to suffer from side wall compaction. Tight soils have less pore space for oxygen. The lack of oxygen creates an environment that supports the denitrification process. In this way, nitrogen is converted to gas and lost. It is no longer available to be taken up by the plant. In conclusion, high magnesium in soils can lead to soils staying wetter and colder in the spring, delaying field work and planting progress but also lead to an environment in which applications are less efficient. Often, more nitrogen will need to be applied in these areas to ensure adequate nitrogen availability.

With the warm weather last week, we saw a lot of activity out in the fields. If you did plant corn or soybeans, you may be worried about when to expect emergence with this cold front expected next week. As a good rule of thumb, corn emergence requires roughly 115 Growing Degree Days (GDDs) accumulated from planting while soybeans require slightly less at roughly 90 GDD. GDDs are calculated by adding the day’s high and low temperatures, dividing by 2, and then subtracting 50. Maximum temperature used in the calculation is 86 and minimum temperature is 50 degrees.

Using this calculation and the predicted temperatures through the end of the month, beans planted today, April 16 ^th , the GDD’s predicted to accumulate between now and April 30 ^th is 90.5. Just enough for the 90 GDDs needed for emergence. Corn emergence, requiring 115 GDD for emergence, would have an estimated emergence date of May 3 ^rd . ^. By waiting a week and planting April 23 ^rd , based on the data we have now, we estimate corn emergence on May 6 ^th . By waiting 7 days and getting past the next cold spell, you reduce the planting to emergence period by 4 days. This decreases the likelihood of damage caused by disease or insects and that could result in a poor stand.

Ideally, the temperature used to calculate GDD for seed emergence would be soil temperature, not air temperature. It would give a more accurate representation on the conditions the seed is experiencing before emergence. Due to access to data, most online calculators use air temperature, (two are included in “Resources”). These calculators become more accurate as the season progresses and more plant biomass is above ground.

Soil Taxonomy

Shelby County, Indiana lists about 30 different soil types. Each soil presents unique challenges and growing conditions for the crops grown. The four most common soils of the county in order are Crosby, Brookston, Miami, and Westland Clay . Those four soil types make up roughly 65% of all soils in this county. Soils are classified based the forming factors and the soil horizons . There are five factors that distinguish soil types. These are parent materials, climate, topography, biological materials, and time. These five factors can be used to predict certain soil types and where they can be found. Soil types are broken into taxonomic series based on the color, structure, texture, and other properties to two meters (6.5 feet) of depth.

The next horizon will be the B Horizon or subsurface horizon. This layer is usually denser and has less nutrients and organic matter than the A horizon. Much of the materials such as clays, accumulate in this zone after leaching from above. The type of accumulation in the horizon will be classified by a corresponding letter following the B. Below the B horizon is the C Horizon . The substrate horizon usually consists of less clay than the horizons above or it might be made up of partially disintegrated parent material. Finally, below the C horizon is bedrock or the R Horizon . Bedrock can be very shallow or very deep. With only the upper 2 meters being used to define a soil series, soils with deeper bedrock layers do not describe an R horizon.

Example of Soils using those from Shelby County, Indiana

Crosby soils are the most common soils in our area making up roughly 33% of all acres in the county. These soils are somewhat poorly drained and were formed by glacial till and thin layers of loess. Loess is a wind deposited sediment that is usually yellowish gray in color. The native vegetation of this soil was hardwood forests. The slope on this soil can vary from 0-6% and will be noted as CrA for 0-2, CrB for 2-4, and CsB for 4-6%. The soil is naturally low on organic matter and is usually most limited by excessive moisture. A typical Crosby soil will have a Ap horizon followed by an A2 at 8 inches. An Ap layer is a plow layer in the soil from continuous tillage. Following the A2 layer there will be a B layer starting at around 11 inches and ending around 34 inches, where we hit the R horizon or bedrock.

The Miami soils are typically some of our least productive soils in the county. They are highly erodible but are better drained than the Crosby and Brookston soils. They typically form on slopes and ridges throughout our county. The native vegetation of these soils are hardwoods. The main area of concern on these soils is erosion. Be careful of tillage on these soils as they erode and wash easily. The slopes on these soils can vary from 2-18%. There are seven different subcategories of Miami across the county. These categories are based on clay, silt, sand, slope of the soil. For more information on these subcategories check out the Shelby county soil survey or the web soil survey linked in the “Resources”. Miami soils typically have an Ap layer 0-6 inches. Next the B horizon from 6-40 inches. Below that is the C horizon typically down to 70 inches.

Westland Clay is a very poorly drained soil that is typically found in the southern part of the county. They are made up of a loamy outwash over a loose sand and gravel. They are typically found in depressed areas of the field. And are usually found with Sleeth soils. The native vegetation is water resistant hardwoods, grasses, and sedges. Organic matter in this soil is high and if properly drained can be made very productive. This soil is usually limited by its high-water holding capacity and its typical flooding. This soil is usually on a slope of 0-2%. The Ap layer is typically 0-7 inches followed by an A12 layer from 7-13 inches. The B horizon typically has sub horizons from 13-45 inches. The C horizon is typically found at 45 inches. These soils are very level and do not drain well so they will usually require tile or surface drainage to be productive.

Welcome New Team Member, CFAP2, Corn Hybrids

Greene Crop Consulting, Inc. would like to welcome our newest employee, T.J. Fisher. T.J. has an educational background in Aerospace Engineering with an Associate’s Degree from Purdue University and a Bachelor’s in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from Ball State. In previous roles, he managed a specialty corn elevator and worked in commercial tomato production. Most recently, T.J. gained hands-on experience with field drainage tile and cover crop application.

He resides in Shelby County with his wife, who is a schoolteacher, and their four children. T.J. is motivated, detail oriented, and has a passion for agriculture. CFAP 2

Earlier this fall we wrote about the second round of CFAP (Coronavirus Food Assistance Program) payments. The signup deadline for program payments is December 11th. The CFAP 2 program is not a continuation of the first program and is funded from a different source. You did not have to participate in the first program to receive a payment from this program. If you have not already signed up for this program, we highly suggest that you do. Please note that just because you signed up for the original CFAP program does not mean that you are signed up for this program. You will need to call and schedule an appointment with your county FSA office. This is not a first come-first serve program, but you should still try to sign up before Friday, Dec 11. If you have any questions about what crops qualify for the program, there is a link to the CFAP 2 website in resources for your review.

Selecting the Right Corn Hybrid

This time of year, seed sales folks are out in force selling you seed for next year’s crop. It can often be overwhelming when trying to select what seed to purchase for the coming crop year. Included are a few factors to consider when selecting hybrids. These include yield potential, agronomic traits, maturity, and cost.

When comparing hybrids, look for yield data that is repeated across multiple locations. Look for trials from universities, grower associations, and seed companies. Look for data from areas that best represent your growing conditions. Check that the hybrids you are evaluating are consistent across trials. For example, a hybrid that is in the top 20% of yield across all trials is a consistent hybrid. Be careful of hybrids that are all over the board for yield. If included, statistical results such as least significant difference (LSD) can help you understand if two varieties truly differ in performance.

Think about disease pressures you have had in the past in fields that are going to corn next year. One of the best ways to fight diseases is with genetic resistances and tolerances. Consider what weed issues have you had. Use that information to decide what herbicide resistance traits you should pick to control those issue. As with herbicides, if we keep using the same genetics, we run the risk of creating resistance. Cool, wet weather patterns or pushing the planting windows can result in stand loss. If you can relate to this, you might also look at the early season vigor scores. The maturity of a hybrid is also important. Ideally, multiple maturities would be used to spread out harvest. Hybrids that finish roughly 100-200 GDUS before a typical growing season ends are ideal. This allows for grain dry down.

Selecting the right hybrids are important, but it is also important to also not break the bank. Choose cost-effective hybrids that meet your needs. Grain Storage and Handling/ 2021 Field Trial Planning

Grain storage in bins on the farm is a common management practice in Indiana. It allows a farmer a chance to receive a higher commodity price by selling and delivering when the buyer needs the grain. With daily temperatures becoming colder, it is important to start lowering the temperature of stored grain to increase its storage life. Grain temperature and moisture both contribute to the amount of time that the grain can go without spoiling. Corn in storage at 40 degrees and 13% moisture can last for up to 150 months according to the University of Minnesota. While corn stored at 17% moisture and 80 degrees will be good for less than a month. The table below shows this relationship. The more consistent you can keep your grain temperature and moisture, the longer that your grain will keep. Grain storage quality can be lengthened by using aeration to regulate these factors.

Without aeration, the cycling of the warm and cold air in the bin causes moisture to move to the top of the bin. This can cause crusting at the top of the bin in the summer when temperatures heat up. Aeration uses fans to initially move cold air through the grain and replace the warm air in the center of the bin. Aeration works to create a uniform temperature inside the bin and “hot spot” issues are reduced. There are four periods of aeration throughout a year. These are the winter holding period, summer holding period, warm up period, and a cool down period. These periods can be seen in the graphic to the right. 2021 Field Trial Planning

Now is a good time to start planning for our 2021 crop season trials that we want to test. With prepay coming up very soon you might start thinking about what tests you want to run and what products you might need. Trials that you might consider include nitrogen rate trials, sulfur applications on soybeans, and micronutrient trials. Many other possibilities exist, as well. On farm trials are important to any operation to make sure you are constantly exploring new ways to increase profitability and yield on the farm.

While planning your trials think about how you are going to measure these trials and what your success criteria are. Make sure that your success criteria can be measured (i.e. weighed, not eyeballed) and are reasonably attainable. Make sure that you have an area in the field is to serve as a non-treated check to measure against. Consider running the test in strips in fields to compare treatments across multiple productivity levels of your field. In the past, you may have read about incorporating livestock back onto to our soils to help build soil health. The lack of livestock on most area farms is an obvious hurdle to overcome. We have removed a critical part of the soil health equation that helped to form our soils in the past. However, there is a new service that helps to bring livestock back onto your land. The Midwest Grazing Exchange is a new website that matches farmers with forage resources with the farmers that have livestock. This is a free matchmaking service that hopes to connect grazers and landowners. The website allows users to create listings of what land or livestock they have, to see examples of grazing lease agreements, and search for specific grazing types or livestock. Non-Traditional Sampling

Every standard soil test we run provides gives a wealth of information for each zone sampled. The list includes water pH, buffer pH, Organic Matter, Exchange Capacity, % base saturation of cations, and Mehlich III extractable amounts of 12 elements: Ca, Mg, K, Na, P, S, Mn, Zn, B, Cu, Fe, and Al. We can schedule additional tests for less common micronutrients besides those listed, if requested.

Aside from traditional soil sampling, other kinds of sampling / tests can help to provide additional insight into your operation to help you drive informed decisions, not just guesses. Below are a few of the many tests available.

An irrigation water test shows the make-up of your irrigation water. Different water sources can strip nutrients (make them available) or bind nutrients (make them unavailable) to soil particles. Sources that tend to bind could be counteracting the benefits of the irrigation water th at applied to our fields. If you have noticed performance of irrigated fields stopping at a level rather than climbing as high as you would expect, have us test your water. This information will help determine if a water source or field needs to be treated. Pairing the water test with a saturated paste test will show nutrient availability when the specific water and soil sample interact in a particular field based on the chemical makeup of the combination.

Starting last year, we began offering a DNA analysis service through Pattern Ag whic h can “fingerprint”, or identify organisms found in a soil sample through their DNA make up. With this you can manage around the potential disease pressures from bacteria, fungi, and viruses that over winter in fields. The test can also identify soil microbes that are beneficial. The DNA data can be used in trait selection and to better place hybrids or varieties based on the issues that could be a problem in the field. The tool could be very beneficial for driving input decisions or knowing what areas you need to keep a closer eye on.

The soil health test (SHT or Haney test) is a test that utilizes a weak acid extraction method that more closely mimics nutrient uptake by plant roots. The test also grades our soil based on the water extractable organic carbon and nitrogen that increase with higher mi crobial activity. The tool is excelle nt for benchmarking our soils as we add in practices like no-till or cover crops. Some farmers are using this to stand out to potential landlords and how they manage the land.

These are just a few of the tests available to you. If you would like to discuss tests not mentioned in this list, please reach out. Learning what is going on in your fields will give you information to assess the performance you are experiencing. There is a wide range of tests from the pre-side-dress nitrate test (PSNT) to soybean cyst nematode (SCN) testing that can help you make informed production decisions. Does choosing your lime source matter? Yes, it does! Not all limes are equal. Lime chemistry and grind are factors that influence the quality of the lime and how it will affect the soil.

Lime sources may have different calcium and magnesium levels. The lime material from quarries in Indiana have calcium contents from 20.5 – 38.3%, while magnesium content ranges from 0.4 – 12.9%. Expect sources with the high calcium to have lower magnesium levels, and vice-versa. This is important because calcium and magnesium affect soil structure. More calcium will help to increase the porosity of the soil, and higher magnesium may make soils “tighter”. However, some soils are low enough in magnesium to initiate a crop deficiency and limit yield. A soil test will help you determine whether a high calcium, high magnesium or intermediate lime source would best match the needs of your field.

In addition to the chemical composition, the fineness of the grind will affect neutralizing power and speed of change. A finer grind creates a greater overall surface area and allows the chemical process to occur faster, resulting in faster pH changes. From an application perspective, a lime source that has small amounts of more coarse material may spread better due to the larger particles propelling the fine material farther in the spread pattern.

Labs use various terms to describe the lime quality such as Total Neutralizing Power (TNP) and

Effective Calcium Carbonate Equivalent (ECC or CCE). These terms suggest an overall quality of due to the fineness of grind in combination with the lime’s chemical properties. They suggest the value you will get for the dollars you spend. TNP or ECC are good references when you look at lime test results. Bottom line, they suggest how effective at changing pH the lime will be.

Summary: First, when choosing your lime source, use your soil test to figure out what source of lime you need, whether calcium or magnesium lime. Next, find lime results from quarries around you to see what

sources are near and make sense. We have test results from different lime quarries we sampled in our area. Look at the grind, TNP and the cost of the lime. Often, we find that change/$ spent is lower with a more expensive lime! We have linked a video below from our virtual meeting this summer that discusses lime sources and how to choose one. Crop Insurance Update

It is November and

harvest is moving toward the finish line. For most of the Corn belt, the crop insurance Harvest Price was recently set for Corn and Soybeans, which both came in higher than the Projected Price. The Harvest Price for Corn is $3.99 (Spring Price $3.88) and Soybeans are $10.55 (Spring Price $9.17). Be sure to get your corn and soybean yields to your crop insurance agent in a timely manner, especially if you think you may have a claim.

If you have a wheat policy, certify with the FSA office soon. Acreage reports need to be completed by early December. If y

Crop Scout and Dicamba Registrations

After a week of rain and poor harvest conditions the weather looks to turn around over the next couple days. Toward the end of the week, many areas accumulated 1-2 inches depending on location. The October 26 ^th Indiana Crop Progress Report suggested that corn was 62% harvested and soybeans were 82% state-wide. Crop quality reports have been very excellent in our area. Crop yields for both corn and beans have been extremely good. Some later planted crops have been experiencing lower yields, but seldom drastically lower. The outlook for remaining harvest work looks very good for this week.

Dicamba Registrations

Dicamba has been reapproved by the EPA for over the top use in cotton and soybeans. This is following the Ninth Circuit Court’s ruling that vacated labels for three dicamba products this past summer. Engenia, Tavium, and Xtendimax have all been granted five-year registrations. This extension does come with some new regulations for all three products. It includes a nationwide June 30 ^th cutoff date for all over the top applications of dicamba on soybeans. The required downwind buffers have increased from 110 feet to 240 feet and up to 310 feet in areas where endangered species are located. Applicators must use and document the use of pH buffering agents to reduce the volatility of dicamba products. The labels will require the same wind speeds, sprayer speeds, and time of day restrictions as the 2018 label. Corn Test Weight
Test weight is often a confusing and misunderstood topic. Test weight is a volumetric measure of grain. Higher test weight grain will hold more dry weight in the same unit of area as lower test weigh grain. You can put more pounds of high test weight grain in bin than you can low test weight grain. Test weight is influence by hybrid but can also be influenced by conditions associated with the season and harvest. One common incorrect assumption that high test weight corn equals high-yielding corn. In fact, it is possible for severely stressed areas to have higher test weight than less stressed areas. That said, a high corn test weight can result in a grower being paid for more bushels since corn is sold as a 56 lb bushel, regardless of the volume or test weight. Test weight is often used to indicate the storability of corn. Corn with a high-test weight will generally store much better than low-test weight corn. This often due to low test weight grains being related to chaffy and more easily broken. Corn moisture and test weight will often go in the inverse of one another. With high moisture, we will most likely have lower test weight corn. Test weight can be influenced by ear rots, hybrids, moisture, and stresses during grain fill.
